After over a year of patient waiting, the practice wicket at Körnerplatz was resurfaced on Tuesday. All the cricket clubs in Berlin owe André Leslie a beer and a manly slap on the back for the effort he put in to organise and lay the new surface. The preparation of the surface and the main Körnerplatz pitch took an entire day. This included:
- Trimming back the edges of the playing pitch
- Marking the boundary and inner circles
- Pulling up the old practice surfaces
- Digging up the even parts of the ground beneath
- Rolling the surface
- Relaying the unlay
- Cutting segments of the old pitch to cover exposed areas.
- Laying the new pitch
- Nailing it in
- Repainting the pitch markings (chunky style, 'cos Sean likes it like that)
- Cleaning the park up
In all, this took about 8 hours to complete. This could have been greatly reduced had we had more volunteers for the day. Alas, despite many cricketers in Berlin saying that they are Arbeitsuchender (and therefore relatively uncommitted), few actually bothered to turn up. André and Sean deserve special credit for their herculean efforts. Additional thanks to Christian, Lennie, Aaron and some of the guys from the Füchse.
